My NRC Experience: Unshattered

Alex Theroux, Account Executive

My name is Alex Theroux and I am the Account Executive for Unshattered, a non-profit social enterprise located in Hopewell Junction that employs women in recovery to make custom and sustainable handbags and accessories.

I had first learned about North Road as a prospective student touring Marist as a senior in high school and was immediately drawn to the hands-on client-facing experience North Road provides for students. I knew that it would be a bit of time before I would get that kind of professional communications experience through classes and a traditional internship, so when I had learned at the end of my freshman year that I’d been accepted into the firm, I was thrilled.

I’ve been on the Unshattered account since the spring of my sophomore year, where I started as an account representative and grew to lead the team as an account executive. Over the past three years, I have watched the organization grow tremendously. Not only have I had the privilege to watch these women succeed, but I have also been able to promote their work through PR. By far my favorite project with Unshattered has been drafting a press release and a pitch for their recent collaboration with Southwest Airlines, a huge achievement for the organization and myself as a senior about to graduate from Marist.

The opportunity to work alongside founder Kelly Lyndgaard, the founder of Unshattered, has also been an amazing opportunity to see a woman-owned business in action as they reach new heights day after day. This summer, I will be joining a female-founded PR agency in New York City, and after working with Unshattered these past few years, I’ve realized how important that aspect of the position is for me.

North Road Communications has in so many ways set me up for post-graduate success. It’s always one of the first things people on interviews want to discuss from my resume, and it has given me real-life scenarios in the public relations industry to discuss before leaving the classroom. I truly would not be set up for a career the way I am now had it not been for North Road and the experience of working on Unshattered.
